Barcode-first Retail ERP and Inventory Management in Sohar

Sohar is the industrial and port hub of the Batinah coast. Goods often arrive through Sohar Port and Freezone or from suppliers in the Sohar Industrial Estate, then move to a growing number of neighborhood stores. Many of those stores are small, with one or two staff on shift. Symake keeps their work simple, with a scan to receive, a scan to move and a scan to count. Behind the counter, the same scans update stock value for the head office in Sohar city centre or in Muscat. Our consultants fly in to Oman for staff training, and support after go-live is remote.

Small stores, complete stock records

Neighborhood stores in Sohar rarely have time for paperwork. Symake turns most stock tasks into a scan on a handheld or phone, so staff can receive a delivery, move stock to the shelf or count an aisle between customers. Behind those scans, the system updates quantities, values and the accounts, giving the owner a full record without extra work at the store.

  • Handheld or phone scanning for staff
  • Quantities and values updated per scan
  • Supervisor approval for adjustments
  • Daily stock summary for owners

Stock control for retailers in Sohar

Each sale in a Sohar store carries Oman's 5% VAT, which the Oman Tax Authority has collected since April 2021. Goods arriving through Sohar Port and Freezone are received against purchase orders, and supplier invoices are matched to those receipts, so input VAT and stock records agree. Fawtara, Oman's e-invoicing programme, is planned in phases. A pilot is planned from August 2026 for about 100 of the largest taxpayers, followed by phase 2 in early 2027 and phase 3 in mid to late 2027, though these dates may still change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can stores in Liwa and Shinas order from a Sohar warehouse?

Yes. Each store has its own reorder levels, and suggested orders go to the Sohar warehouse as transfer requests. The warehouse picks by scanning, and the store scans the goods in on arrival.

What if items arrive without barcodes?

You can print labels from the item record using an internal code. Staff stick them on at receipt, and from then on those items scan like any other item in the range.

Do staff need much training to use the scanners?

Very little. Store tasks are designed so staff can learn receiving and counting in a single session, run by consultants who fly in to Oman. Support after that is remote.

Can one item have several barcodes?

Yes. An item can carry barcodes for the single unit, the pack and the carton. Scanning a carton barcode at receipt adds the right number of units to stock automatically.

Is Symake based in Sohar?

No. Symake is headquartered in Bengaluru, India, and has delivered 200+ projects. It has no office in Oman. Consultants travel in for workshops, training and go-live, and support is remote.

How does the system help with goods from Sohar Freezone suppliers?

Goods are received against purchase orders by scanning, and the supplier invoice is matched to the receipt. Extra charges can be added to item cost, so stock value reflects the full cost.

Will Fawtara affect how we record purchases?

Fawtara is planned in phases from 2026 to 2027, and dates are not final. Keeping purchase invoices linked to receipts now makes the move easier when your phase begins.

Can owners see stock from home?

Yes. Owners can open dashboards on a phone or laptop to see stock value, low stock and adjustments for each store, and approve transfers or write-offs remotely.
